We are pleased to present our Manufacturing Champion for November - Nicklin Transit Packaging.
Established in 1913, Nicklin Transit Packaging is a fourth-generation family owned business that has evolved to become the UK’s leading independent provider of bespoke timber and corrugated transit packaging products and services. Whilst extremely proud of their long history and traditional values, the company is a modern forward-thinking business with an innovative approach and unique capabilities. Fundamentally, Nicklin manufacture and supply products but ultimately see themselves first and foremost as service providers.
Whilst providing competitively priced packaging products is a given, the wider cost impacts of packaging use on customers can be far reaching and way beyond the headline product price alone. As such, Nicklin aims to provide each of its clients with a range of bespoke products and services that deliver optimum value for both their customers’ operations and across their wider supply chain.
Their clients range from large multinational organisations through to local SMEs, operating across a broad range of industries and sectors, from automotive to construction. By developing close relationships with each client to gain a comprehensive understanding of their products, supply chain, business processes and objectives, Nicklin aims to deliver the optimum bespoke solution for each client and maximise the value they receive.
Over the last decade, the business and manufacturing landscape has changed on many levels, increased price pressures, product commoditisation and competition amongst a host of challenges. Over this time, Nicklin has achieved impressive, year on year growth. What sets the business apart is their focus on innovation, services and the adoption of technology to deliver unique benefits to customers.
When specifying transit packaging there is a tradeoff to consider around headline price, the potential for packaging failure in use (and subsequent product protection and health and safety issues) and environmental impacts at the end of its useful life. Each of these considerations are directly linked to both the structural design and the material volume used in the specification of the packaging. By interrogating structural design and optimising material content, Nicklin are able to provide validated and cost-effective transit packaging products that minimize the impacts of cost, waste and pack failure in use. To enable this and help predict product performance in use, the company has developed a unique, award winning solution by applying Finite Element Analysis (FEA) techniques to simulate real-world forces in a virtual environment. A technique that is widely used in other manufacturing sectors such as automotive and aerospace but not previously within the packaging sector.
Such a keen focus on innovation has led the business to work in regular partnership with leading proponents of advanced manufacturing in academia, specifically with the Advanced Services Group at Aston University on servitization and the Warwick Manufacturing Group at the University of Warwick on materials analysis.
The company also place an emphasis on their service provision outside of the physical product such as vendor managed inventory to provide customers with the best possible value from their budget
A true innovator in what is a hugely competitive industry, Nicklin Transit Packaging is the go-to independent timber packaging manufacturer for the myriad areas of UK industry that rely on transit packaging solutions to do better business.
