Plessey provides award-winning integrated solutions for smart LED lighting using its IP protected MOCVD based GaN-on-Silicon technology which is globally acknowledged as the platform for fully emissive monolithic microLED displays.
Today Plessey’s core focus is the provision of innovative illuminators for display engines (DMD and LCOS) and full-field emissive microLED displays that combine very high-density RGB pixel arrays with high-performance CMOS backplanes to produce very high-brightness, low-power and high-frame-rate image sources for head-mounted displays (HMDs), and augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR) systems.
MicroLED’s offer greater benefits over incumbent technologies, such as OLED and LCD, offering higher brightness, lower power and higher contrast capabilities. The base technology, GaN-on-Silicon, is itself a strong value proposition in the microLED market with cost saving and its ability to scale up using large wafer diameters and incumbent silicon fabrication capabilities. Large wafers enable larger die and greater integration capabilities and allow the exploitation of other inherent performance benefits that provide application advantages such as better thermal properties, greater surface emission, wafer level uniformity and additional system integration.
The move from an array of discrete LED’s to Plessey’s monolithic arrays also has huge benefits. Currently, small LED arrays are built by pick and place techniques, individually placing small numbers of blue then green then red LED onto a TFT backplane with inherent yield issues. Plessey’s monolithic approach allows microLED arrays to be produced across the whole wafer in one process, the number of arrays being dictated by the pixel pitch and wafer size. The RGB colourisation process happens at wafer level and is followed by very stringent alignment and bonding to a second backplane wafer allowing full video display controls. This means that post wafer saw a fully functional RGB array is available for use in car head-up-displays (HUD), AR/MR, military HUD, pico displays, wearables, smart phones and general displays.

In summary, Plessey’s GaN-on-Silicon monolithic microLED technology enables simplified optical systems that are brighter, smaller, lighter, higher performing & cheaper than incumbent light sources currently used in AR/MR and display applications. It is the scale of these fully functional RGB arrays that impresses, with a HD TV equivalent array (1920 x 1080 RGB pixels) being contained in an array that is 0.7” on the diagonal, this shrinking to 0.47” in late 2019. Plessey’s microLED technology has recently been named as a CES 2019 Innovation Awards honoree in the Embedded Technologies category ahead of its participation at CES in January 2019, the global stage where next-generation innovations are introduced to the consumer marketplace.
