Great find ! The detail and finish on this model is exceptional. It would be great to get a sense of the time this took to produce and also the work they are doing around tolerances. Also interested in preparation of the materials (in this case titanium). If you had shown me this video only a few years ago I would have said that we are at least 10 years away from this. It is moving very quickly.

Great question. I am attending the event this year and I am particularly excited about the range of speakers and the opportunity for engagement within the workshops. The running format looks solid (as indicated by the event being sold out) and the exhibits look great. It will be good to see these all in a single setting coupled with the seminars. Looking forward to it !

Yes, many of these things are wrapped like Easter eggs ! Commonly, an easy way to add perceived value is via the packaging. Supply chain or purchasing associates who may not be directly linked to the factory floor can also over specify (with good intention). It could also be a damaged part and an 8D review has root caused this to transportation media etc so suddenly everything gets wrapped in bubble wrap and so on. This is where my interest was stemmed and I wondered what other manufactures who see this have done to counter it. This only takes one or two suppliers to start shrink...

Thanks Caitlin Carpenter. Great response ! I am going to follow up on these. We do have several office buildings that we spend significant sums on cooling and heating but have not connected these to wider systems such as hot water. This makes full sense. Also server rooms which as you noted are constantly being cooled even when the temperature external to the building could be utilized. We do use excess heat from our site compressors to heat parts of our facility but have not expended this to other industrial equipment. Thanks for the info - helped in moving the thinking forwards. It's...

Coca-Cola have recently announced sustainable packaging goals to help collect and recycle the equivalent of every bottle or can sold worldwide by 2030. As manufacturers we have a responsibility for the whole waste chain and and to understand how our packaging impacts our customers and the environment. Much of the packaging can be said to be more of a requirement for shipping purposes and product identification & protection rather than cosmetic requirements such as in store fronts. We have nearly all seen or experienced first hand over zealous packaging of items, be it bubble wrap, boxes...

Identifying new trends and trying to understanding them is hard enough without having to scour the web to find all the pro's and cons. To this end I thought I would link some very informative short videos ranging from 'What is a smart factory ?, 'How is digitization changing manufacturing ?' to 'The role of leadership' and much more. These are available via but also suggest visiting the website for lots more news and articles. To start you off I have linked a video detailing a 'Manufacturers Journey through Industry 4.0.' Enjoy and let us know your thoughts !

Many manufacturing business are on a continuous journey of improvement. Many deploy lean tools and techniques and many also deploy six sigma methodologies. Very roughly these can be categorized into waste and variation reduction techniques. Within my business we deploy all variations of waste and variance reduction within our Crane Business System as a central pivotal piece. We are on a continuous journey ourselves and this will involve automation and CoBots and other new technologies but also (and importantly) involve engineering out the waste at the NPD stage, arguably where 80% of all...

Across several of our sites we consume significant quantities of heat. This is directly used for heating products in preparation for powder coating. Much of this heat is then released to atmosphere without recovery. I am interested in readers experiences of implementing a heat recovery system and the benefits that they experienced. I am particularly interested in how you re-used the heat (water, building heating during colder months) and if you found you could re-use the heat across different adjacent buildings. Look forward to hearing about your experiences (positive or...

Hi Paul Edwards. We have had them to some of our sites and reviewed what the structure of the support would look like however we found them expensive compared to what resource we could apply ourselves (and the problems we had to tackle). I think this was mainly due to the nature of the opportunities we had so we would not be fully utilizing the resources and expertise they had available. As an overview of how it worked. We made contact, arranged a date to visit the site. They then come across and presented what they do and what their background was. We then had a site tour and we took...

Hi Simon Judge. They look great. I have read through some of the use-cases but would happily hear some case studies or a link if possible. Have you seen many applications in manufacturing. I can imagine for a large site they can act as some sort of RFID type tag of kept with products ? Do they also track in real time and store the history ? If for instance you wanted to track forklifts across a 7 day period could you place these on top and see movement history ? Best - Garry

Hi @Lee Hibbert. Thought that the group may find this interesting: This details the work taking place by IBM and Maersk around shipping and supply chain logistics. More details can be found here with new press release today: https://www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/53602.wss As you may be aware there is a superficial nature to this technology (token price is a clear example) but it is like an iceberg. As media concentrates on price the actual work taking place to utilize the technology is going on at a rapid pace in the background. The developers and technical skills...

I wanted to expand on this thread with another thought... A quick research of Mechanical Manufacturing Apprenticeships shows little development towards 4IR or supporting technologies. See EEL link: http://www.eal.org.uk/PDF/Engineering/500_9852_4_fs.pdf As an example a typical Level 3 Diploma in Mechanical Engineering covers the following subject areas: Core Units: - 301 Engineering health and safety

As I continue to think about the 4th industrial revolution, the impact this is having and the ripples it is creating into the future I am continuously drawn back to people, behavior and leadership. I am interested in your thoughts in what type of leadership will be required to navigate the manufacturing sector though the 4IR not only as part of the UK but importantly in your own facility and on your own shop floor. Do you feel you have the 'bench strength' in place, if not what, are you doing to develop this ? Will there be new personal qualities/traits required that have...

To add to the conversation, the below clip shows a great example of the introduction of CoBots into a working environment and the background work that this sort of development requires. It also demonstrates a completely new use case for the CoBots and adds a new dimension of movement around a working area rather than a stationary system. https://www.theengineer.co.uk/collaborative-robot-ocado/

is quickly coming up and registration is open. One of the exciting stands will be ABB presenting their future for robots and automation as well as AMRC showing the factory of the future. An exciting aspect is the development of smart sensors that can be retrofitted to current machine tools to move the industry towards 4.0 without an significant upfront cost but gaining much of the innovation. It would be great to know if anyone is presenting at MACH this year or if any one planning to attend.

A few years ago several legislation changes made the introduction of solar PV financially non-viable/very difficult to justify. I cannot remember the exact details but this was around the rates available and the reduction there of. I have come across an article showing that an ABB facility in Helsinki has the 2nd largest solar PV capacity in the world (on a roof surface) as well as the CIS Tower in Manchester. Question: Does anyone have practical experience in any recent introduction of solar PV into a manufacturing facility ? I am keen to hear from anybody who has actually...

Great question: I am fortunate to work in an environment that is constantly driving for improvements, supported and underpinned by a great business system. My example; although I wont go into sales data etc etc, will touch upon what stands us out from the crowd and is especially visible when customers come to visit the sites. For many years Crane Co has been driving a Crane Business System. This business system is comprehensive, all encompassing and driven from the top right across the organisation and is part of what we do every day. A common saying within the business is 'improving...

Thank you for the linked paper Peter Templeton. A fascinating read. A particularly interesting point was the case study around UK pharmaceutical sector and the opportunities smart packaging can bring. This seems so obvious now I have read it. The hard part is effectively done (physical logistics and delivery) and we can fall over in 'the last mile' with a patient not taking a course of treatment to completion. Smart packaging seems so suited to help with this problem. A great, far reaching application. Appreciate the detail on the industry trends and the coupling of this to industry...

Interested in all your thoughts and experience in production tracking and Andon displays. I am interested in this from a hard and soft perspective. I have 2 questions: 1. What are the best examples of Andon displays you have seen any why ? Was this purely due to the technology or was this due to the culture of the business and how they were deployed/employed ? 2. When an Andon is triggered it requires a reaction. This reaction could be to go to gemba and solve a problem etc. This immediacy and visibility of a line fault can be a change to what could be hidden fire fighting. How did you...

Thought it would be interesting to make you aware of the Smart factory Expo taking place this year in Liverpool (14-15th November). https://www.tmsmartfactoryexpo.com/ There looks to be a lot of activity around 4IR and the application there of. It can be difficult to get your arms around what exactly is the 4IR and how it applies and these types of Expo's really help align the understanding.
