NPL's latest Manufacturer Measurement Network (MMN) event - The Future of Transportation - held this Tuesday was a great success! We had over 25% more attendees than our previous best. Our next event will be on the 16th April 2019, focusing on Skills in manufacturing & engineering. 'Succession Planning & the Skills Mix for Manufacturers' will address two main themes regarding the future of manufacturing: access to appropriate technology and how to develop a team with the appropriate skills to meet the current and future needs of the business - including team members who have grown up...

Hi Tim Morris, how about writing a blog post of your story adopting kanban for your own company? I'm sure other SMEs will find this useful. We have our manufacturing champion feature which I think this would be excellent for?

Hi Charmyn Hall , I am the membership manager in the Midlands and the East of England. I have a background in researching how manufacturers compete on services and I also have an interest in something called Servitization, where manufacturers are adding 'advanced services' to their business models and improving their customer value proposition, or service offering, to their customers to create transformational long-term partnerships rather than transactional relationships. A great group to look at and consider speaking to local to yourselves in Bristol would be Aston University...

Hi Steve Farrant, Thanks for sharing the answers with the community, I'm sure that others will find the information useful. Can I ask who you approached for the training in the end? Do let me know if there's anything else we can help with and I encourage other community members to continue sharing their experiences of using tachos. Thanks Amy

Many thanks for the help but i have had to go to the experts and buy a training course. the answers to my questions were do we need an O licence to use the trailers.. NO can anyone drive the van without a trailer... YES if driven > 62 miles away for a demo, is a tacho needed... YES and the driver (not his usual role) must have a diary with him to show what he has been doing the previous 28 days regardless of how far he is going

Hi Steve Farrant Had this through from my team, hope it helps In answer, if the vehicle is being used to tow a trailer where the possible maximum gross weight of towing vehicle and trailer exceeds 3500kg, the vehicle must be operated under operator licence conditions and a tacho card must always be used in the name of the driver while being used. If the max gross weight of the towing vehicle without trailer does not exceed 3000kg, then a tacho card does not need to be used. That said, if the vehicle is on an operators licence, it would be best to always use a tacho card so that accurate...

This is a Gov't site quoting all the rules. What I ideally need is someone who knows about the application of these rules in the real world. Thanks though.

I am hoping that you have an expert whom you can connect me too that will be able to guide us on the subject of our Hilux which we occasionally use to pull a trailer to a distance greater than 62 miles from base. It is fitted with a tacho and my initial questions are If it is being driven without the trailer does that driver need to be using the tacho Do we require an ‘O’ license to use it with the trailer from here Will the new rules make any difference to what we need to be doing When being driven with the trailer does each possible driver need their own personal tacho card

It's been a great year at NPL North of England! We have had a great success with our "Manufacturer Measurement Network" events - the MMN is a network set up to support manufacturing SMEs, larger organisations and affiliates (http://www.npl.co.uk/mmn/). We have held some brilliant events in 2018, including our most recent "Joy of Engineering" event in November which saw students from colleges in Huddersfield and Leeds spending a few hours with us, engaging with projects such as drones, motorsport, and the Institute of Railway Research, as well as NPL's 'Robot Wars' robot and interactive...

Hi All, At the end of 2017, I attended an open day via EEF of Bisley Office Furniture. They had implemented Kanban and were encouraging others to implement it also. Even though we are a much smaller company, and a different kind of business (a mixture of subcon work and our own product), we set about implementing Kanban for our internally made parts. We have put together a brief Powerpoint on our progress. Might convince SMEs that it is possible! Happy to give more details info if required. Cheers, Tim Morris

So we encourage you to share your key business successes with the wider community below :) As the year draws to a close we...

For several years market conditions have been favorable for buying professional indemnity insurance, however recent events indicate that conditions are now changing and will be hardening for the first time in many years. Due to poor performance of results, the focus will be on managing performance rather than growth. How could this affect manufacturers - With reduced capacity in 2019 some firms may experience unexpected premium increases, more restrictive coverage or delay in receiving quotes and terms. What steps can you take - It sounds obvious but don't leave it until the last...
